Alex Masso

Alex Masso is a drummer/percussionist with wide ranging experience in different styles of music and educational settings. He studied Jazz Performance at Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has played professionally for over 20 years.

Alex is best know in the music scene for his work as drummer and co-leader with ARIA Award winning band The Vampires, a world-roots-jazz group that have released six albums and performed all over Australia and parts of Europe on more than 20 tours, from regional community halls to major jazz festivals. In 2017 the band was nominated for an ARIA Award and the first jazz group to be shortlisted for the prestigious Australian Music Prize for 'The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke', in 2023 they won an ARIA (Best Jazz Album) for 'Nightjar'.

Alex performs with a number of other bands including Queen Porter Stomp, Lyre Byrdland and Electric Korma, as well as freelance work playing a range of genres (rock/pop covers, jazz, blues, reggae and funk music.) 

Alex has been teaching since 2007 at schools in Sydney and Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. He is passionate about teaching drums and percussion, particularly developing the reading, technical and aural skills to thrive in a wide range of musical situations and helping students pursue their interests while also exploring different styles and enriching students' musicality. He teaches young beginners through to intermediate-advanced levels, and regularly works with students through their HSC Music preparation, exams and audition preparation. 

Besides playing and teaching, Alex is an active advocate for and supporter of the music industry, is currently Chair of leading jazz organisation SIMA, and Executive Officer of the industry association for music products (wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers etc), the Australian Music Association. 

Alex is currently available for lessons only at Ashbury Public School, Concord West Public School, and Wollongong Conservatorium of Music.
